Here’s a big chunky slice of funky, soulful, hip hop inspired jackin house beats. Sweet Rhodes keys blended with a dash of L L Cool J, a twist of Snoop, a female rap battle classic with Roxanne Shante dissing Queen Latifah, some electro vibes and a classic 80s sampling bomb to make you want to shake ya little tail feather.

Throw your mind back to the mid 90s – those were the days right!? When Garage was Garage, etc, etc.

Following on from my previous garage mixes (here and here), I wanted to do a mix from the transitional moment of UK Garage (1996-98) when the Jungle bass lines were worked in, from just before and around the time people started calling it “Speed Garage” (surely the worst genre name in the history of music). For me, it felt like a return of the “old skool hardcore” vibe… slower tempo again but room shaking baselines.

The first tune on my mix is MJ Cole‘s first solo release (he started off as a drum and bass engineer for SOUR) – a rare white label under the pseudonym Mat-Lock – raw MJ Cole flavour.

Still Ripe Vol 2 (Vinyl House and Garage Mix) – Mixed by Max One

As promised more garage-ey goodness from back in the day… Still on the 1994/96 tip. Real pioneering stuff here, from Todd Edwards cutty vocal style on The Sample Choir track through the steady rolling deep and emotive G.O.D. Limited (Mike mentioned it was missing from Still Ripe Vol 1… he was right). G.O.D was another Grant Nelson’s alias btw. I finished on a classic white label track that I don’t think ever got a proper release… I Want You by Rosie Gaines of Closer than Close fame and this was her follow up single, that didn’t have the success but was a proper gem. Check her amazing original soulful jazz scat vocal improvisation skills at the end… makes the scat man look like donald duck.

Still Ripe (Vinyl House and Garage Mix) – Mixed by Max One

After selling my decks a couple of years ago, because I’d mainly gone digital and they’d been sitting in my loft for some time, I’d get pangs when a tune would pop into my head and I only had it on vinyl and was unable to track it down online to listen to it. There’s almost every record ever made on YouTube and I sometimes rip the odd tune from there but the quality is poor-ish and anyway there are just some that can’t be found.

All this led me to do the right thing and pick up another Technics deck. This time I decided to go proper old skool and get the Technics 1200mk2 (the silver one) rather than my old 1210s (black version).

I realised it was possible to run my deck and mixer through my digital set up and benefit from the great FX you get using Traktor Pro.

I decided to put together a vinyl mix of a few of classic garage tracks (it’s about time for another garage revival right?). Few of these are pretty rare and I haven’t listen to them for around 10-15 years, some are classics that you still hear today.

I called it Still Ripe as a nod towards Grant Nelson’s record Label Nice n Ripe which really pioneered this sound.

DJing on the Sony Web Commercial for the Cybershot WX5

So, as well as a DJ, i’m also a Viral/Commercials Producer (wow, man of many talents). I was recently working on a series of web virals for Sony and one of them was for their new Cybershot WX5.

One of the scenes (to demo the low light feature of the camera) required a cool club / lounge bar party to be built on this small section of St Katherine’s Docks

This scene also required a DJ and so after looking at a couple of possible extras as options (yuck) and working out if I’d be too busy on set myself, I got the thumbs up from the Director and MD and it was decided I should play the role… It also required me to actually spin some tunes and get a proper vibe going on the set, making sure everyone had the right swing.

In the end i also brought down my speakers (KRK VXT4s)… they’re actually studio monitors and not meant for playing out but i knew they’d be loud enough… well I ended up blowing one of the bass bins (boo) but it was a wicked vibe in the end and the video turned out nice too. So, all’s well that ends well.

As promised, I’ve finally gotten round to doing a good and proper old skool mix . I decided to keep it a little bit on the funkier, slightly darker, less over heard side for this one. As good as the anthems are at a rave, these are the ones that send me back… You can just see the proper roots of drum and bass / jungle in these ones… So put on your Dossee Possee , your Blamey jeans, your Reebok classics, shave your head, bang up a zoot, and flash up a lighter…
